MACC investigation part of wider crackdown on law enforcement corruption.
Key points:
– Two Johor officers allegedly accepted RM635,000 (US$134,000) in bribes
– Remanded until 5 August for further investigation
– Case falls under MACC Act with penalties of up to 20 years in prison
As reported by The New Straits Times, two police officers from Johor have been remanded for seven days in connection with a corruption probe involving RM635,000 in alleged bribes tied to the protection of illegal gambling operations.
The men, both in their 40s, were arrested while giving their statements at the Johor state office of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
Authorities suspect the pair solicited and accepted cash from an individual in exchange for not taking action against gambling-related offences.
The Johor Bahru magistrate’s court approved the remand application earlier today, with Magistrate Mohammad Izham Mohd Aliyas granting the order until 5 August.
A source close to the investigation said the officers are believed to have been directly involved in facilitating the continuation of the illegal gambling operation by collecting bribes as a form of ongoing protection.
Good to know: Under Section 16(a)(B) of the MACC Act 2009, the offence carries a jail term of up to 20 years and a fine amounting to at least five times the value of the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is greater
Johor MACC deputy operations director Hairul Ilham Hamzah confirmed the arrests.
The case adds to a growing list of enforcement personnel being investigated or charged in a nationwide effort to address corruption within security agencies.
This development comes amid a renewed focus on transparency and integrity in the police force, as MACC reiterates its zero-tolerance approach towards abuse of power and corruption.
