Merkur expands UK footprint with acquisition of Milton Keynes casino
Deal marks the company’s second UK casino venue and follows its recent return to the US market.
Key points:
– Merkur acquires former Aspers casino in Milton Keynes, closed in April 2025
– Venue to reopen with local job creation and expanded gaming options
– Move builds on Aberdeen launch and Nevada licence approval earlier this year
Merkur Casino UK has announced the acquisition of The Casino MK in Milton Keynes, marking its second casino venue in the country.
The site, located in the Xscape leisure complex at Marlborough Gate, was previously operated by Aspers before closing on 7 April 2025 after the company entered administration.
Merkur confirmed that preparations are underway to reopen the venue in the coming months, with a recruitment drive aimed at creating local jobs for both new and former employees.
The acquisition follows the launch of Merkur’s Aberdeen casino in 2023, which the company said has demonstrated strong demand for its blend of table games, slot machines and hospitality services.
The new Milton Keynes property will offer blackjack, poker, roulette and modern slot titles, with planned upgrades to align with Merkur’s brand standards.
Good to know: Milton Keynes is also home to Merkur Casino UK’s headquarters
In May 2025, parent company Merkur Group was granted a licence by the Nevada Gaming Commission, re-entering the US gaming market after more than two decades. The approval also cleared the way for its pending acquisition of Las Vegas-based Gaming Arts, which is licensed in more than 155 jurisdictions.
Merkur Casino UK COO Mark Schertle said: “The venue has played a significant role in the local leisure and entertainment market.”
Industry analysts view the acquisition as a sign of continued confidence in land-based gaming, despite wider challenges facing the UK casino sector.
By securing a second casino site, Merkur aims to strengthen its presence in the country while building on international expansion efforts.
