Netherlands: KSA confirms no gambling sponsorships at Zandvoort Grand Prix
Rules clarified for sports sponsorships ahead of the Dutch Formula 1 weekend.
Key points:
– The KSA has confirmed no statements or sponsorships from gambling providers will be present during the Zandvoort Grand Prix
– Both Dutch and foreign teams must comply with advertising rules, ensuring no gambling-related branding is displayed
The KSA has clarified the rules and regulations that apply to sports sponsorships in the Netherlands. This information has been shared with sports associations and event organisers ahead of major sporting events.
Organisers of the Formula 1 Heineken Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort were recently contacted and, following this exchange, it has been confirmed that no teams sponsored by gambling providers will participate in the event with visible branding.
The rules apply to all teams competing in the Netherlands, including international teams. Visible sponsorships or promotional messages from gambling providers are prohibited, regardless of licensing status in other countries.
For context, this time last year, the KSA called for the Sauber racing team and the Dutch Grand Prix to avoid Stake promotion, as Stake was the team’s title partner but is not regulated in the Netherlands.
Under Dutch law it is forbidden to display advertising for gambling providers without a Dutch licence. Such activity constitutes the promotion of illegal gambling and is a violation of existing regulations.
Good to know: The 2025 Dutch Grand Prix will be held from 29-31 August 2025 at the Circuit Zandvoort
Even licensed providers face restrictions, with limits on the advertising of online gambling.
The KSA has called on all parties involved to remain alert and to contact the authority with any questions about the admissibility of specific sponsorships or advertising content.
Recently, the KSA carried out automated data quality checks on all active licence holders’ Control Databases (CDBs), identifying potential deficiencies that vary in nature, severity and frequency. The regulator also issued a warning to TonyBet for offering prohibited football-related betting markets in breach of Dutch law.
