Key points:
– New continental iGaming trade alliance appoints its first CEO in Peter Kesitilwe
– Kesitilwe brings regulatory experience from the Botswana Gambling Authority to the board
– Other board members include senior figures from Betway, SportyBet, BetPawa and 888Africa
Peter Kesitilwe has been installed as the first CEO of the pan-African iGaming trade association, the African iGaming Alliance (AIA).
He is being drafted in from the Botswana Gambling Authority where he held the same role.
The new continental trade body was formed this year by BetPawa, 888Africa, SportyBet and Betway, the latter of which entered its iGaming offering into Botswana’s regulated market in May 2025 and was publicly welcomed by Kesitilwe at an official launch.
During May, the BGA issued 10 new bookmaker licences, marking a significant expansion of the sector.
Kesitilwe will head up a board featuring alumnus from each of the founding companies, including Dan Thomson of BetPawa, Jai Mahtani of SportyBet, Christopher Coyne of 888Africa and Anthony Prissman, who sits on all the boards of Betway’s African markets.
Prissman welcomed Kesitilwe, saying: “Peter’s strong regulatory background and leadership experience bring immediate credibility to the AIA. We are excited to work with him to help shape a responsible industry across the continent.”
The AIA has put itself forward as the voice of the online gaming industry in Africa and points to responsible gambling, fair competition, consumer protection and sustainable tax frameworks as some of its key objectives.
Kesitilwe made a statement announcing his excitement at the challenge ahead: “I look forward to working with regulators and policymakers to build a vibrant, sustainable & competitive industry that upholds the highest standards of responsible gambling and consumer protection.”
Coyne’s welcoming comments refer to a rigorous recruitment process, from which Kesitilwe’s long-term vision for African iGaming was the standout.
