Key points:

– Ten e-learning modules released to aid horse welfare

– Modules developed by BHA, the Horse Welfare Board and veterinary experts

– Funding comes from the Racing Foundation

The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) has announced the completion and free accessibility of 10 new e-learning modules designed to help anyone working within British racing to provide better care to their horses.

The modules themselves have been developed and delivered by the Horse Welfare Board in collaboration with veterinary experts, the BHA Welfare Team and BHA Training and Education Team.

The tools are targeted at the 10,000+ people working in various equestrian-related roles across Britain, and are part of fulfilling the sport’s commitment to its “A Life Well Lived” campaign.

All of the course is free to access for anyone employed in British Racing or the thoroughbred breeding industry.

Modules cover: Worming, ulcers, rehoming, heat stress, behaviour management, water provision, body language and equine euthanasia, and all are available via the e-learning platform Racing2Learn.

Good to know: A BHA-led study showed recently that in the court of public opinion, horse welfare was still the sport’s biggest hurdle, with 27% of potential customers expressing concerns

Baroness Minette Batters, Independent Chair of the Horse Welfare Board, said: “Welfare doesn’t sit still, so it is vital we keep everyone in the sport up to date with the latest in equine care and wellbeing. This wouldn’t be possible without the generous support of the Racing Foundation, to whom we are immensely grateful.”

Indeed, the Racing Foundation awarded the Horse Welfare Board £3m in 2022 to support welfare projects such as these.

Tansy Challis is the CEO at the Racing Foundation and said: “Ensuring the highest possible standards of care for racehorses is a key priority for all stakeholders within British racing and this project, along with others from the ‘A Life Well Lived’ strategy, will contribute to achieving this aim.”

A five-year plan for the ‘A Life Well Lived’ campaign was set out in 2020, focused on quality of life, lifetime responsibility, safety and building trust.
