Key points:
– Flutter UKI launches £500,000 Cash4Clubs fund, offering 250 grants of £2,000
– Survey shows 43% of UK grassroots sports clubs cancelling services due to funding shortages
– Programme focuses on sustaining clubs and supporting underrepresented groups in sport
Flutter UKI has announced the launch of a £500,000 ($682,000) Cash4Clubs fund aimed at helping grassroots sports organisations across the UK and Ireland.
The initiative comes as new research highlights the financial pressures many community clubs are facing, with 43% reporting that they have had to cancel services due to rising costs, and 22% warning they may not be sustainable within a year.
Cash4Clubs, which has distributed nearly £7m since its inception in 2008, will provide 250 clubs with grants of £2,000 each.
The funding can be used to purchase equipment, hire coaches, expand training programmes or support marketing efforts to attract new members.
The scheme has backing from sporting figures, including Alan Shearer and Peter Crouch, who are encouraging clubs to apply.
Crouch described the grants as a potential lifeline, stating: “An additional £2,000 can make all the difference to local clubs – it can keep the lights on, keep facilities open and accessible and provide much-needed funds to invest in equipment or training volunteers.
“These clubs aren’t just about sport – they’re giving people a place to belong, to build confidence and stay active. It’s why Cash4Clubs is so important, and I would urge people to apply.”
Good to know: Examples of previous beneficiaries include the Sunderland Deaf Darts Society and Parkinson’s Ninja, a club that uses exercise to support people with Parkinson’s disease
Betfair Ambassador Alan Shearer added: “Throughout my career, on and off the field, I’ve witnessed the incredible power of sport to transform lives.
“Local grassroots clubs and organisations aren’t nice to have; they are essential community assets. These grants can provide a vital helping hand and the impact, particularly in deprived areas, can be profound.”
Last year’s programme supported over 200 clubs and reached almost 32,000 participants, with the majority of grants directed toward underrepresented groups such as women, disabled athletes, racially diverse communities and LGBTQ+ participants.
Applications for this year’s funding round are open until 8 December via the Cash4Clubs website.
