DraftKings commits $1.6m to responsible gambling initiative across US

DraftKings has committed a minimum of $1.6m to local councils across the US over the next three years, in a bid to promote responsible gambling in problem areas.

DraftKings commits $1.6m to responsible gambling initiative across US

The new initiative, entitled The State Council Funding Program, is a multi-year financial commitment, with the goal of providing critical funding to support local non-profit organisations. The program will be open to all members of the National Council on Problem Gambling, of which there are 35 state affiliate councils.

Each council is able to apply for a $15,000 handout in each of the three years, and may use the fund broadly at its discretion. It is expected that the money will go towards bolstering services and programs for those harmed or at risk of harm from gambling, as well as the training of council staff and operation of gambling helplines.

Keith Whyte, Executive Director, National Council on Problem Gambling, commented: “State councils provide a first line of defence for addressing the needs of people impacted by problem gambling. This significant initiative by DraftKings shows its commitment to and knowledge of the importance of the work state councils provide.”

Similarly upbeat on the proposal, Christine Thurmond, Director, Responsible Gaming, said: “Having spent several years of my career working with the state council in my home state, Massachusetts, I have seen first-hand how these organisations are a tremendous resource for individuals and families, and serve as a critical stakeholder and partner for gaming operators.

“DraftKings is committed to advancing responsible gaming in collaboration with state councils across the US. Our hope is that this funding will give councils that extra support needed to fund priority areas, expand services, or hire additional staff; whatever is most needed, we want to help financially.”

This agreement is the latest in a string of responsible gambling initiatives by DraftKings. In the past year, the company has partnered with the likes of Harvard Medical School, the American Gaming Association and the International Center for Responsible Gaming.
