Key points:

- IGT has announced that its consortium bid for the Italian Lottery licence is expected to be successful

- Led by IGT, the consortium is comprised of Allwyn, Arianna 2001 and Novomatic Italia

- The licence is anticipated to stretch over 9 years, with Flutter set to lose out following its seemingly unsuccessful bid

International Game Technology (IGT) has announced that the Judging Commission has officially completed its technical and economic analysis of the LottoItalia – a consortium organisation led by IGT – bid for the Italian National Lottery licence.

As such, the supplier has stated its expectation that the LottoItalia consortium – comprised of Allwyn, Arianna 2001 and Novomatic Italia – will be formally announced by Italy’s Customs and Monopoly Agency within the next 35 days. The licensure it further expected to last until 2034.

Overall, the consortium of gambling conglomerates has, as stated in IGT’s latest press release, raised a total of €2.23bn ($2.51bn) in funds to secure the licence. Indeed, following the release of its full Q1 2025 financial results last week, IGT itself specified that a total of €500m had been ‘bookmarked’ for the Italian Lottery licensure, should its bid be successful. Elsewhere in the Italian market, IGT was also a recent recipient of its sixth consecutive responsible gaming certification.

Commenting on this latest development, IGT CEO, Vince Sadusky, said: "The €2.23bn million investments in upfront fees reflect the significant value of the new license and IGT is confident that the investment will enhance our revenue and profit potential.

"The exciting innovation pipeline with fresh launches planned for commencement of the new license will drive Lotto wager growth. In addition, we plan to significantly grow our iLottery sales and leverage that momentum to expand into the Italian B2C iCasino, sports betting, and other digital gaming business."

Building on this, IGT Executive Chair of the Board, Marco Sala, said: "The Italian Lotto concession is one of the world's most important lottery contracts. IGT and its predecessor companies have successfully managed the license for 30+ years through constant innovation and the introduction of cutting-edge technology. The award is very gratifying, and we are honoured and excited to continue working with the ADM for nine more years."

Good to know: In contention with the IGT-led consortium was Flutter, who entered a rival bid for the Italian Lottery via its Sisal subsidiary which, by all appearances, has been unsuccessful

Separate recent related company news saw IGT also added to the growing list of UAE gaming vendor licencees in early May, receiving official GCGRA certification to supply its land-based gambling products within the nation.

Elsewhere in the lottery industry, consortium member Allwyn is currently facing regulatory scrutiny from the UK’s Gambling Commission – and could be subject to financial penalties for failing to reach contractual obligations pertaining to the UK Lottery licence.

Also speaking on this latest Italian lottery update was Robert Chvatal, Allwyn CEO, commented: "We’re thrilled to continue our strong partnership with IGT in Italy for another nine years. We’re pleased that Allwyn’s positive contribution to the consortium, including our proven track record of modernising and growing lotteries across Europe, will continue to support IGT’s exemplary stewardship of an important Italian national asset. We look forward to working together to grow the Italian Lotto, while developing innovative solutions to support responsible play.”
