Key points:

– Eighty-five cage cashiers at Encore Boston Harbor have voted to join Teamsters Local 25 to seek improved wages, benefits and working conditions

– The addition increases the number of Teamsters employed at the casino to 225, expanding the union’s presence at the property

Eighty-five cage cashiers at Encore Boston Harbor have voted to join Teamsters Local 25. The move comes as part of efforts to negotiate higher pay, improved benefits and workplace conditions.

The cage cashiers join 140 other Teamsters already employed at the casino. Cage cashiers handle chip and cash transactions for customers at the property.

The vote adds to a trend of casino and hospitality workers organising to improve working conditions. The new members will now participate in union negotiations alongside existing Teamsters at the property.

Ranjana Thapa, an Encore worker and new member of Local 25, stated: “We joined the Teamsters because we believe in fairness, respect and building a better future for everyone on the job.”

Good to know: Teamsters Local 25 represents more than 13,000 members and their families in greater Boston and southern New England

“It wasn’t easy, but we overcame every obstacle, stood together through the hard times, and never backed down.”

Tom Mari, President of Local 25, added: “These workers fought long and hard, determined to win a strong voice on the job.

“All of us at Local 25 are ready to make sure these new members get the industry-leading pay and benefits that they deserve.”

Casino workers are facing increased workloads and workplace pressures linked to operational changes. Similar concerns have been raised in other regions, including Macau, where staff and legislators have called for improved staffing, scheduling and workplace protections.
