The Macau United Citizens Association calls for better protections for local workers

Key points:

– Group highlights concerns from casino staff and residents

– Push for improved typhoon work safety measures

– Advocates higher local employment ratio in gaming sector

The Macau United Citizens Association has urged the Government to review labour conditions for local employees, following a series of visits and discussions with residents and industry workers in the NAPE district. As reported by Macao Daily, the group gathered feedback on current employment challenges, with particular attention to the gaming sector and work-life balance.

Residents raised concerns about staff being required to work during Typhoon Koinu, despite dangerous conditions. While authorities have previously called on businesses to follow official guidelines for typhoon and emergency work arrangements, the group said that practical protection for workers remains inconsistent across sectors, especially in casino operations.

Casino employees also voiced stress over frequent changes in betting table layouts and digital systems, which require continuous retraining. The group called on the Government to encourage operators to provide adequate adjustment periods to frontline staff to avoid disciplinary action from unfamiliar procedures.

In its policy platform, the Macau United Citizens Association also proposed the introduction of a medical escort leave system, alongside more flexible shift options such as family-based or parent-friendly rosters. These changes, it argued, would help employees balance work and caregiving duties, enhancing overall wellbeing.

The group further recommended that the government review the employment composition of gaming operators to ensure that at least 85% of their workforce consists of local residents. It stressed that as the economy transitions, it is essential to secure stable employment pathways for Macao’s workforce, particularly in its largest employment sector.
