British Horseracing Authority unveils new environmental strategy

– The initiative has been funded by the Racing Foundation and it set for implementation over the next five years

The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) has developed a new environmental strategy in collaboration with the Racing Foundation, as the pair look to further secure industry sustainability for UK horseracing.

This strategy now undertaken by the authority and its Racing Foundation partners is centered on the four key pillars of reducing carbon emissions, preserving water availability, minimising waste and protecting nature and ecosystems. Indeed, the initiative also builds on additional groundwork already undertaken within the industry to help reduce any environmental risk contributions from the British horseracing industry.

Funded entirely by the Racing Foundation, this new strategy is set to be carried out over a five-year period initially and has been informed by the opinions of various industry stakeholders, partners and participants.

Now, following approval from the BHA Board and Industry Programme Group, the initial phase of the rollout will focus on environmental data gathering and analysis, specifically focusing on the industry’s greenhouse emissions and natural impact – with the BHA then set to identify potential funding sources.

It has been a busy month for the BHA, with Charles Allen’s formal appointment as Chair of the Authority being followed closely by strike action undertaken by the wider horseracing industry against potential tax rises in the UK. Elsewhere, recent horseracing CSR action saw new horse welfare e-learning modules released for British racing employees last week.

Good to know: A recent BHA study indicated that horse welfare remains the biggest hurdle for the industry’s future

Commenting on this latest update, BHA Head of Environmental Sustainability, Katie Carr, said: “The success of British racing and breeding is intrinsically linked to the health of our natural environment. It’s therefore essential for the breeding, training and racing of thoroughbred horses that we all do what we can to protect it.”

Building on this, Racing Foundation CEO, Tansy Challis, stated: “The Racing Foundation is proud to support the development of this strategy, which sets a clear direction for how the industry can meaningfully contribute to an environmentally sustainable future.

“The strategy serves to coordinate much of the great work taking place in this area across the industry and drive progress as part of an aligned approach. By supporting this work, we are enabling racing to make a meaningful and positive impact for the benefit of horses, people and its communities.”
