Keith Barr is a highly respected figure in the global hospitality industry, with a career spanning over three decades. His extensive experience and knowledge have made him a prominent executive in the hotel and resort sector, ultimately leading to his appointment to MGM Resorts’ Board of Directors in August 2024.

Major Achievements

Barr is a distinguished leader in the hospitality industry, acknowledged for his extensive experience, global perspective and strategic vision. With a career spanning over three decades, Barr has held pivotal roles in high-profile hospitality brands – most notably IHG Hotels & Resorts where he served as CEO from 2017 to 2023.  

Following on from his long tenure with IHG, Barr was ultimately appointed to MGM Resorts’ Board of Directors in August 2024. 

Barr’s journey from hotel operations to the boardroom of one of the world’s largest gaming and entertainment companies exemplifies his extensive knowledge of the hospitality industry.  

Employment

Barr’s journey into the world of hospitality began after graduating from Cornell University’s School of Hotel Administration. He started his career in hotel operations, gaining hands-on experience that he later utilised in his subsequent leadership roles. 

In 2000, Barr joined IHG Hotels & Resorts following its acquisition of Bristol Hotels and Resorts, where he had held several senior positions. Over the next two decades, Barr ascended through various leadership roles within IHG – developing a versatile and deep understanding of the hospitality industry. 

From 2009 to 2013, Barr served as the CEO of IHG’s Greater China business – a role that helped shape his global perspective on the industry. 

Following on from this, Barr was appointed as IHG’s CCO in May 2013, a position he held for four years. During this time, he was responsible for managing IHG’s global brands, revenue delivery channels and loyalty programs. 

Barr’s career reached new heights in July 2017 when he was appointed as the new CEO of IHG Hotels & Resorts. For six years, he led the company’s strategy for growth and value creation, and under his guidance, the company was able to expand its global footprint. His leadership also saw the company through significant challenges, including navigating the COVID-19 pandemic. 

After stepping down as CEO of IHG in July 2023, Barr took on the role of Senior Business Advisor for the company, continuing to lend his expertise to the organisation. 

Most recently, Barr was appointed to the Board of Directors of MGM Resorts International in August 2024. This appointment recognises his extensive experience and is hoped to bring valuable insights to MGM Resorts as the company continues its global expansion efforts.
