Ontario grants GLI-33 certification to theScore Bet

Operator theScore Bet, a subsidiary of Penn National Gaming, has obtained Gaming Laboratories International GLI-33 certification for its mobile sports betting and iGaming software in Ontario, Canada.

GLI-33 certification is one of the requirements theScore Bet has to achieve prior to being allowed to offer online sports betting and iGaming via its app in the Canadian region.

TheScore Bet will offer Ontarians its online sports betting and gaming services, subject to receipt of all regulatory approvals and satisfaction of pre-launch requirements imposed by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission (AGCO) and iGaming Ontario.

The Province of Ontario is planning to launch regulated online iGaming and sports betting with private operators in early 2022. Indeed, there is much anticipation about the size of this market, with projections earmarking figures larger than in most US states.

John Levy, theScore CEO, commented: “We’re pleased to be one of the first online gaming operators to secure GLI-33 certification in Ontario. We are eager to launch theScore Bet in our home market and showcase our unrivalled combination of media and gaming to fans across the province.

"This approval is a credit to our first-rate product and engineering team, who have been hard at work to ready theScore Bet for launch in Ontario.”

TheScore is a subsidiary wholly owned by Penn National following the recent multi-billion-dollar merger. Its media app ‘theScore’ delivers fans personalised live scores, news, stats and betting information and is currently available in New Jersey, Colorado, Indiana and Iowa.

TheScore started out as stats and sports media content but, naturally, the overturning of PASPA created additional opportunities for the brand within the gambling space.

Penn National, meanwhile, now owns both theScore and Barstool Sports, as it bids to truly disrupt top performers in the US sports betting space, such as FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM and Caesars.
