The reminder is about the impending ban of the use of role models in gambling advertising.

The ban comes as the KSA looks to reduce the volume of gambling advertisements, with a warning issued in February 2022 regarding adverts aimed at young people.

Previously, the KSA issued a warning to a KOA licence holder in regards to misleading sports betting advertisements in December 2021.

The ban on the use of role models is set to come in on 30 June; it will be applicable to all gambling operators and advertisers, with exemptions given to charity lotteries, the state lottery and the lotto.

In laying out the terms of the ban, the KSA defined role models as “all persons who enjoy some form of public fame, such as (former) professional football players, influencers and models.”

The regulator explained its decision to inform both gambling operators and advertisers, saying: “The gambling providers receive the letter because they are responsible for their advertising.

"The selected marketing and influencer agencies, and industry associations, have been informed because they are important links in the advertising sector.”

Gambling advertisements will be closely monitored by the authority from 30 June, to ensure all concerned parties are complying with the new regulations.

Any breaches or infringements of the ban will be met with immediate enforcement.

The Dutch regulated iGaming market was launched in October 2021, after years of wholesome delays, and as a result the KSA has worked to overhaul existing advertisement regulations, after the market was initially flooded with gambling ads.
