The Gambling Commission (GC) has announced, in collaboration with a group of the market’s operators, it will implement a series of measures to make gambling safer.

A group of more than 30 operators, co-ordinated by the Betting and Gaming Council, took part in a series of GC workshops to tackle the issue of safer gambling.

As a result of these workshops, the GC has decided to introduce a VIP age limit - preventing under-25s from joining VIP schemes.

There will also be “a reduction on intensity of play,” such as the speed of spin and the removal of turbo buttons, while online advertising rules will be strengthened to protect vulnerable groups.

The measures on VIP customers will be implemented as eraly as 14 April.

Neil McArthur, GC CEO, said: “We have been encouraged by the progress on VIP incentives, safer advertising and safer products.

“We set these challenges to deliver real and rapid change for consumers in key areas of risk.

“However, it is important these commitments are implemented as soon as possible. It should not take months to implement safeguards many would expect to be in place already.

“We will now consult on the necessary changes to our rule book to ensure all operators have to meet the new standards.”
