NCPG offers advice to bettors ahead of Super Bowl LVI

The National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) has offered advice to Super Bowl LVI bettors ahead of the match on Sunday.

According to the NCPG, over 31 million people will place a sports wager on the match, with legal online and in-person Super Bowl wagers projected to total $1bn.

A total of 30 states, as well as the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, offer legal sports betting, and so the NCPG has reminded gamblers of the measures they can take to avoid problematic gambling.

“For most adults, gambling can be a fun and entertaining experience, but there are risks involved,” a statement from the NCPG read. “It is critical to know the risks and have a plan before you begin gambling.”

The NCPG has shared tips from ResponsiblePlay.org, which include understanding the odds and house edge, never borrowing money to gamble, teaming up with friends to stick to a personal betting plan, and setting a timer on a mobile phone to keep track of time spent betting.

Other advice includes treating gambling as a form of entertainment as opposed to a method of making money, and taking a break when gambling is no longer fun.

“The trends we are seeing around sports gambling and problematic play are very concerning,” said NCPG Executive Director Keith Whyte. “Too many people still don’t recognise they are exhibiting signs of this addictive behaviour and are unaware of the help that is available to them.

“Every organisation that provides gambling opportunities has a responsibility to develop policies and programs to promote responsible gambling and address problem gambling.”
