GeoComply has recorded over 80 million betting transactions that took place over the Super Bowl weekend, across the US.

The number represents an increase of 226% versus last year, a rise that will be largely attributed to the expanded legalisation of online sports betting in the US over the past 12 months.

There are 19 states which have fully legalised online sports betting, while a total of 31 states offer sports betting in some form.

While the number of transactions will also include illegal wagers, GeoComply witnessed a growth in the volume of unique accounts accessed at legal online sportsbooks. Across the weekend, 5.6 million betting accounts were accessed, representing a leap of 95% year-on-year.

Prior to the Big Game weekend, the American Gaming Association predicted that over 31 million Americans would wager $7.6bn on the Super Bowl.

Individual states have started to report betting figures from the weekend, with Nevada reporting record-breaking wagers of $180m. The 2022 handle was up 32% year-on-year.

In terms of the event itself, Super Bowl 2022, or Super Bowl LVI as it was officially known, was won by Los Angeles Rams, which triumphed over Cincinnati Bengals by a scoreline of 23-20.

The winning franchise, playing in its home stadium, won its second Super Bowl, and its first since transitioning to Los Angeles from St. Louis. Cincinnati Bengals has never won the Super Bowl in its history.
