Wynn Resorts plans chemical clean-up

l and casino operator Wynn Resorts is plotting a clean-up operation on the chemical plant in Boston where it is planning to build a $1.6bn casino.

A meeting is to be held at Tufts University in Medford on Tuesday evening, after environmental tests showed that industrial use of the 30-acre site has constituted to a high amount of heavy metals being found.

Wynn was selected ahead of fellow casino company Mohegan Sun to be granted the Boston-area licence in September, with construction plans including a 27-storey glass hotel with 500 luxury rooms and a gaming floor hosting 160 table games and 3,200 slot machines, as well as a nightclub, restaurants and retail stores.

But plans for the hotel have had to be redesigned after the Massachusetts Gaming Commission asked for changes to be made to the glass hotel tower, and the updates will form part of Wynn’s first status report since being granted the casino licence.

There are plans to clean the Mystic River on the site, which was previously used for industrial purposes, while a boat dock will provide a water-taxi service into Boston.

It is possible that Wynn’s plans could be halted entirely, as Massachusetts voters will decide on 4 November in a ballot whether to repeal the state law that authorises casino developments.
