All aspects of creating a slot come under design; from style and theme through to math model and music. Each element is a piece in the final puzzle of creating a great slot, making design arguably, the most crucial part of creating a game.
At Play'n GO we have a rigorous and extensive process to ensure that every title that comes out under our banner is designed to the highest standard. The process includes numerous phases and milestones to consistently check that what we’re doing is the highest quality.
Each milestone is not dictated by time, but by a certain level that we must reach. We believe that sticking to a rigid timetable cannot bring out the best in our process and so, while we plan with timeframes in mind, this is not our greatest motivator. This especially comes into play where the design of that game is under a more meticulous design plan.
We recently released a collaborative game titled Nyjah Huston – Skate for Gold and with a slot like this one, the importance of design becomes especially relevant. Nyjah Huston is a worldwide superstar and on his way to being one of the greatest skateboarders in the history of the sport. As well as designing an enjoyable and engaging slot that fits the narrative theme, we have to ensure all aspects of the design represent Nyjah, his style and his talent.
From designing symbols in his likeness and putting him in a variety of “action” poses to reflect his movement, we have to give players an experience that feels like they’re watching him perform. This even included creating bonus features that could accurately reflect Nyjah’s skill and trickery.
To capture the right style in our design, we channelled the open urban spaces where a lot of skateboarders spend their time perfecting their craft. Including designing street art symbols to mimic graffiti; street art has become synonymous with skateboarding, and is so interwoven into the culture, it had to be a part of this game design to add to the authenticity.
From symbol creation, through to background art and music, parameters in a game like this are just that little bit narrower, and you have to make sure you don’t sacrifice gameplay for style and vice versa.
Great design is and always will be one of the guiding principles in our game creation and bt adhering to that, we can continue to provide the market with innovative and entertaining titles.
