Cyprus Casinos temporarily suspends operations

A subsidiary of Melco Resorts & Entertainment, Cyprus Casinos (C2), stated it will temporarily suspend its operations due to the rising number of COVID-19 cases. The short announcement was published on their website saying: “With utmost priority the safeguard of your health and a sense of responsibility, Cyprus Casinos temporarily suspend their operations according to the government directive.” The suspension of operations is expected to last until 31 December.

Cyprus Casinos manages four venues: C2 Limassol, C2 Nicosia, C2 Ayia Napa and C2 Paphos. The company is also constructing a large City of Dreams Mediterranean venue that is said to cost €550m ($673m).

This is not the first suspension of operations for the casinos. C2 Limassol and C2 Paphos were temporarily closed on 12 November as the number of COVID-19 cases spiked, and now the remaining two casinos will join that list. Previously, Cyprus Casinos had to close its doors for three months from 17 March to 13 June.

Last week, on 11 December, the Republic of Cyprus placed restrictions on churches, hospitality venues and shopping malls, and there’s a curfew when leaving home for non-essential trips (9 pm-5 am). The lockdowns are expected to last until 23 December when the situation will be reviewed again.
