Carl Brincat exclusive: Pandemic a "wake-up call" for certain MGA practices

Recently appointed CEO of the Malta Gaming Authority (MGA), Dr Carl Brincat, believes the Covid-19 pandemic has served as a "wake-up call on certain practices" for the regulator.

According to the executive, the digitalising effect of the pandemic has not only changed things for consumers and operators but the regulator itself, too.

Speaking exclusively to Gambling Insider for its upcoming Malta Focus magazine, Brincat said: "At the MGA, it [the pandemic] served as a wake-up call on certain practices we had in place that were not conducive to the digital submission of all information, and we started implementing changes on that front.

"These changes will be long term, as the restrictions that had to be put in place because of the pandemic served to challenge practices and educate us on where we can improve."

General business will be similarly impacted in the long term, according to the MGA CEO.

While many believe office work will return to normal once the world is allowed to resume pre-pandemic life, Brincat is one of many who believe the shift to a more flexible routine will become an ever-lasting legacy.

He explains: "The same can be said for business, which has also gone through forced growth in this sense, including with the introduction of increased remote working.

"Although when things get back to normal it is more than likely everyone will want to go back to the office, lessons learnt about the effectiveness of a certain element of remote and flexible working will most likely be retained; and allow greater freedom for many employees to better fit their work within the framework of their personal commitments."
