Over the 31 days of the month, bettors placed $8.6m worth of bets daily, down 12% from November, making December’s volume fall short of the record of $287.2m wagered the previous month.
December’s revenue also dropped 32% from the record $19.7m set in November. However, December’s revenue showed a 77% year-on-year increase, making it the second-highest in state history. The last month of the year generated $957,637 in tax revenue for the state.
The online market generated 91% of the month’s bets, producing $11.9m in revenue while retail produced $1.5m in net receipts.
Caesars led the online market with $90.1m in wagers followed by DraftKings with $72.3m in online bets.
The retail market was topped by Diamond Jo Worth, with $6.2m in bets; Ameristar Council Bluffs came in second with wagers worth $5.5m.
December offered fans “an overwhelming” amount of football and basketball to bet on. In addition to a full month of NFL and NBA, bettors also showed interest in college basketball.
Over the year 2021, Iowa’s sports betting market produced $2.04bn (in online and retail wagers), up 255% from 2020. The online market generated 88% (or $1.8bn) in wagers, up 344% compared to the previous year. The retail market showed a year-on-year increase of 175%.
