Revolutionary Racing gets green light to open Kentucky racetrack

The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission (KHRC) has awarded developer Revolutionary Racing a licence to open a new Ashland, Kentucky American quarter horse sprint racing track, and historical horseracing (HHR) facility.

The approval comes as the ninth and final licence granted by the KHRC, in an effort by the Commission to reintroduce quarter horseracing to the state of Kentucky.

Governor of Kentucky Andy Beshear said: “We are excited to have quarter horseracing back in Kentucky. This project invests $55m and creates 200 jobs in the northeast corner of our commonwealth.

“Bringing quarter horseracing back to Kentucky is an exciting opportunity to honour a lost Kentucky tradition and contribute to the state’s economy.”

It has been 30 years since Kentucky hosted quarter horseracing, with the state previously enjoying a rich racing history dating back to 1780.

Revolutionary’s licence application included a request to construct a Boyd County quarter horseracing track. Phase one of this project will include the construction of a sprint race track, HHR facility, paddock with offices and walking ring, two 88-stall racing barns, a test barn and parking facilities. Phase one is expected to be completed in 2024.

Boyd County Judge Executive Eric Chaney said: “We have all rallied behind this project because we understand what it will mean for our community – from jobs to tax revenues to quality of life.

“Revolutionary Racing has been a true partner with us throughout this process and we look forward to them being part of our community for many years to come.”
