The Court of Appeal in England and Wales has granted IGT's request to discontinue its appeal against a High Court decision, relating to damages against the Gambling Commission.

Back in July, the UK High Court dismissed legal claims made by IGT against the Gambling Commission, which involved claims for damages, with the court's decision stating that IGT did not have a case for damages after the award of the Fourth National Lottery license to Allwyn.

In September, IGT brought an application for permission to appeal to the Court of Appeal to overturn that decision.

However, IGT has now had its request to dismiss its appeal accepted (as strange as that may sound).

The legal issues surrounding the decision to award Allwyn the Fourth Licence have been ongoing since early 2022, when the National Lottery announced that its preferred applicant for the license was Allwyn, which resulted in a legal response from Camelot, partnered with IGT.

Since then, of course, Allwyn has acquired Camelot.

In an update from the Gambling Commission on the situation it said: “We remain resolute that we have run a fair and robust competition, and that our evaluation has been carried out fairly and lawfully in accordance with our statutory duties.

“Our priority is to continue to work to implement our decision for the benefit of participants and good causes. The Fourth National Lottery Licence is due to be granted on 1 February 2024.”

In other Gambling Commission news, online gaming operator Gamesys has been issued with a £6m ($7.6m) fine from the commission owing to social responsibility and anti-money laundering (AML) failings.
