15 Macau restaurants receive Michelin stars in 2022 review

Macau’s casino resorts have seen their Michelin star ratings slip in the French guidebook’s 2022 restaurant review.

Michelin2022

When compared to 2021, the gambling hub has three fewer Michelin-starred eateries, continuing the city’s downward trend for a second straight year.

Despite social distancing rules and a curfew on dine-in services, Macau’s chefs have been hard at work in their attempts to impress the Michelin guide’s notoriously picky inspectors.

However, their efforts do not appear to have paid off. In the Michelin Guide Hong Kong Macau’s 2022 list, 15 restaurants shared 26 stars, down from 18 restaurants and 30 stars in 2021.

Wynn Macau’s Golden Flower restaurant previously held two stars, but now, the venue no longer has a rating, though still merits a recommendation from the guide. Tim’s Kitchen at SJM Holdings’ Hotel Lisboa had an even less stellar year. In 2021, it boasted a one-star rating, but is now closed.

But SJM likely remains undeterred as its Robuchon au Dôme and The 8 received three-star awards, while its steak house, The Kitchen, retained its one-star rating.

Melco Resorts also enjoyed a good year, receiving a total of seven Michelin stars for its four restaurants at City of Dreams, Studio City and Altira Macau: Jade Dragon, Pearl Dragon, Ying and Alain Ducasse at Morpheus.

And though there were fewer stars awarded to fewer restaurants, Gwendal Poullennec, the Michelin Guides’ International Director, remarked on the industry’s resilience amid a tough year.

He said: “The restaurant industry in Hong Kong and Macau has once again shown its resiliency and dynamism after a challenging 2021.

“Their ability to innovate despite the circumstances makes this community a special one.

“And to see the emerging talent and trends coming out of the region in the face of such obstacles should give hope to those around the world that great things are to come, something truly worth celebrating.”
