Official announcement on Las Vegas Strip F1 race imminent

An official announcement is set to be made imminently regarding a Formula One (F1) race on the Las Vegas Strip, as reported by the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Talks between local and F1 officials have reportedly been taking place since 2021. The 2022 F1 schedule is already set, meaning the earliest the race could take place on the Strip is in 2023.

Portions of Las Vegas Boulevard would, understandably, be temporarily closed down to host the race. Early plans suggest that drivers could race in and around the Strip, including areas around the Bellagio and further north.

Pedestrian bridges already in place across the Strip would provide prime viewing spots for spectators, thus eliminating the need for F1 to construct temporary stands.

The organisation would, however, be responsible for temporary road improvements, such as adding concrete barriers along Las Vegas Boulevard.

The Las Vegas Strip race reportedly wouldn’t be a one-time event, with organisers planning on not only making it a regular race in the sport’s calendar, but presenting it as F1’s flagship event.

As noted by the Las Vegas Review-Journal, any race taking place in Las Vegas would mark the first time that the area hosted such a race since the 1981/82 event that was held in Caesars Palace parking lot.

The 2022 F1 season begins this weekend in Bahrain, and seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton is currently the bookies’ favourite to clinch the title. The Mercedes driver is seeking to reclaim the title from Red Bull Racing driver Max Verstappen.
