DraftKings to launch Puerto Rico sportsbook

DraftKings has expanded upon its partnership with the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, which operates the Foxwoods Casinos brand, to launch a new retail sportsbook in Puerto Rico.

While subject to receiving the applicable licences, DraftKings will launch a retail sportsbook at Foxwoods El San Juan Casino in the coming weeks.

Matt Kalish, President North America and Co-Founder, DraftKings, commented: “Since establishing our relationship with the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and Foxwoods more than a year ago, we’ve seen immense success, which can be attributed to the collaborative efforts between the organisations and shared vision for providing customers with the very best.

“Puerto Rico is known for its rich and vibrant sports culture, and we look forward to being able to provide fans with a safe and legal form of sports betting through our retail and online sportsbooks.”

The move is similar to DraftKings’ most recent involvement with the Foxwoods brand, having opened a permanent retail sportsbook at its venue in Connecticut, in November 2021.

At its Puerto Rico casino, Foxwoods has recently finished a $135m renovation project to reopen the venue, with DraftKings’ new sportsbook part of the casino’s 15,000 square-foot arena.

Rodney Butler, Chairman, Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, said: “We have made tremendous strides in the sports betting space in our relationship with DraftKings, which has continued to be a valuable partner, through our online and retail experiences in the state of Connecticut.

“As we expand our partnership with DraftKings to the beautiful island of Puerto Rico, at the Foxwoods El San Juan Casino, we are confident we will continue to create unforgettable memories for customers and sports fans alike.”

This represents the third new retail sportsbook from DraftKings in recent weeks.

In March, the operator announced plans to launch a permanent location at Casino Queen in Illinois.

The following day, DraftKings opened a temporary sportsbook at Hollywood Casino Baton Rouge, in Louisiana, with plans to build a permanent location in 2023.
