William Hill & Betfred stop retail trading in respect of Her Majesty’s passing
William Hill and Betfred have both ceased retail trading in the UK today, 9 September 2022, as a mark of respect following the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
In a statement made on 8 September, William Hill said: “We’re deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Her Majesty The Queen. We send our deepest condolences to The Royal Family.
“As a mark of respect, our shops are closed this evening and will remain closed tomorrow.”
Meanwhile, Betfred posted: “As a mark of respect, all our shops are closed this evening and will remain closed tomorrow.”
As two of the Big-Four retail sportsbooks, William Hill and Betfred decided to cease trading for a day. This falls in line with several sporting events being postponed over the weekend.
Such events include UK racing, which has halted all meetings to mark the passing of the Queen, calling her racing’s “ultimate patron.”
Furthermore, the Premier League and English Football League (EFL) have both announced that all fixtures this weekend will be postponed as the UK enters into a period of National Mourning.
The Premier League’s Chief Executive Richard Masters said: “We and our clubs would like to pay tribute to Her Majesty’s long and unwavering service to our country.
“This is a tremendously sad time for not just the nation but also for the millions of people around the world who admired her, and we join together with all those in mourning her passing.”
Elsewhere, play at the PGA Championships in Wentworth has been abandoned, as many more events popular with sports bettors continue to be postponed following the Queen’s passing.
