Regal and Yoti team up to introduce “facial age estimation” for slot machines

Many slot machines in the UK will now require customers to take a selfie before they can use them in a bid to reduce underage gambling.

Gauselmann subsidiary Regal Gaming Technologies, a provider of slot machines to Britain’s leisure and hospitality sector, has teamed up with Yoti to trial a “digital age verification solution.”

Together, the companies hope to create a “safer and more age-appropriate” experience in venues, and above all else, “bring a halt to under-18 players.”

To accomplish this, Regal will employ Yoti’s “facial age estimation” technology, which can supposedly determine whether or not a customer is over 18 based on a selfie.

“We are committed to using our tech for good, in particular how we can help protect against anyone underage accessing age-restricted leisure activities or online content,” said Yoti CEO Robin Tombs.

“We’re delighted to be working with Regal Gaming Technologies to prevent underage play and create age-appropriate experiences.”

Yoti claims this solution will help to reduce underage gambling while preserving customers’ privacy. No personal details or documents are required, and all images are instantly deleted once a user receives their estimated age.

A digital ID app will also be available, allowing customers to share a “verified ‘over 18’ attribute” by scanning a QR code on the machine.

Regal’s MD Finance and Commercial, Andrew Bell, said: “Modern pubs are busy, fast-paced working environments and integrating Yoti’s solution into our machines to assist site staff with age verification is a great way to tackle underage gambling. It’s fast, accurate and highly efficient.”
