European safer gambling week breaks records with 8 million messages

The 2023 installment of European Safer Gambling Week, held from 13-19 November, has exceeded expectations and set a new standard for promoting responsible gambling practices.

The initiative, led by the European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA), witnessed 8 million safer gambling messages across social media platforms throughout 20 European countries.

The week-long event, supported by an impressive coalition of over 160 partners, showcased a substantial increase in participation compared to the previous year.

Among the contributors were operators, trade associations, harm-prevention organisations and national gambling authorities, collectively reinforcing the growing acknowledgement of the significance of safer gambling in Europe.

This impactful campaign spanned major social media platforms, experiencing an extraordinary 430% surge in engagement. The campaign delivered crucial safer gambling messages, translated into over 20 national languages, offering practical resources like safety tools and tips to players and the wider public.

In addition to its online presence, the initiative featured 18 localised events across Europe, each themed around safer gambling. These events became discussion forums led by industry experts, academics, harm-prevention organisations, and representatives from national gambling authorities.

Maarten Haijer, Secretary General of EGBA, expressed his satisfaction with the week's success, highlighting its pivotal role in fostering a robust culture of safer gambling.
