The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) is continuing its efforts to combat illegal gambling activities by clamping down on casino-style gaming machines across the state.

Last year, the MGCB identified and removed such machines from various businesses, in an attempt to safeguard the integrity of Michigan's gaming industry and protect consumers from unregulated practices.

Michigan law strictly prohibits all forms of gambling unless explicitly authorised under state law, such as within licensed casinos.

The proliferation of unauthorised gaming machines is seen as posing a threat to the investments made by legitimate gaming establishments.

Additionally, these illegal operations often lack essential consumer protections, exposing vulnerable individuals to potential exploitation.

Henry Williams, Executive Director of the MGCB, stated: “Thanks to the vigilant supervision of the Michigan Gaming Control Board, last year agency personnel were able to target and disrupt several instances of illegal gambling activities that undermined the integrity of our legitimate, regulated gaming industry.

“With a commitment to maintaining fairness, transparency and public trust, these proactive efforts were undertaken — thanks to many tips from concerned Michigan citizens — to ensure safe, regulated gambling environments.”

The MGCB's actions have led to tangible results, with 64 Michigan businesses receiving notices to cease illegal gambling activities in 2023. As a result, 167 illegal gambling machines were removed from operation.

Furthermore, significant progress was made in seizing and liquidating assets associated with illegal gambling operations – a move that hopes to disrupt the financial networks that sustain these activities.
