Genting Malaysia preparing to re-open

Genting Malaysia will be re-opening two Malaysian hotel resorts: Resorts World Kijal and Resorts World Langkawi. The resumption of work is set for 18 June and the re-opened properties will function as non-gaming venues only. The company’s other two properties, Resorts World Awana and Resorts World Genting (Malaysia’s licensed casino), will remain closed with no date set yet.

All four casinos have been closed since 18 March as part of the country’s lockdown measures, with closures being extended several times. While Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin announced a recovery plan through 31 August, there’s no opening date for Resorts World Genting, but the company hopes to open its doors by the autumn.

Genting Malaysia has reported losses since the beginning of the lockdown, with the Q1 costing the company MYR418.0 million ($97.8 million) in net losses. The company’s outdoor theme park is pushed back by an additional 12 months. The park was supposed to open in Q3 this year, but the opening is now tentatively scheduled for Q4 2021.

While the virus containment measures in the country halted the industry, specialists are predicting a full restart of the economy after 1 September. It’s likely the casinos will have to wait for re-openings until then.
