Detroit casinos set to reopen after shutdown

Casinos in Detroit, Michigan, plan to reopen next week after being closed for over a month due to the coronavirus pandemic.

MGM Grand Detroit and MotorCity Casino Hotel will reopen on 23 December, while Greektown Casino could also welcome back customers in the coming days.

According to the Michigan Gaming Control Board, table game and slot revenue at the three Detroit casinos declined 55% year-on-year from January through November 2020.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer worked with state officials to ease restrictions across the state, allowing casinos to reopen with a limited capacity following a shutdown that began in mid-November.

Capacity will be capped at 100 people, while social distancing requirements must be in place, with food and drink concessions to remain closed. The latest requirements are expected to last until 15 January 2021.

MGM Grand Detroit will reopen at 5pm on 23rd December, with more than 1.500 slots and video poker machines available, as well as the BetMGM Sportsbook.

“Our team is prepared to welcome back just as many guests on our casino floor as we had prior to our closing in November, socially distanced across our 150,000+ sq. ft. casino floor,” said David Tsai, president of Midwest Group, MGM Resorts International.

MotorCity Casino Hotel will reopen its doors at 1pm on the same day, with returning employees to be tested for COVID-19.

A statement from Greektown, meanwhile, read: “As we prepare for our reopening, we ask that you remain patient while we continue to work with the Michigan Gaming Control Board, public health officials, state and local leaders. We look forward to opening a safe gaming environment for you soon.”

This is undoubtedly good news for the gaming sector, considering so many other pandemic-related re-closures. The hope is these casinos will be able to stay open rather than prematurely closing again, although that is at the mercy of the coronavirus spread.
