Macau reports 58% monthly increase in GGR for March

Macau’s Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau has posted gross gaming revenue of MOP$8.3bn (US$1.04bn) for March 2021, a 58% increase from the prior-year period.

It is the highest monthly total of 2021, with January and February reporting figures of MOP$8.02bn and $7.3bn respectively.

March’s figure represented a 14% rise from February 2021, driven by an increase in visitation numbers from mainland China. The region last week reported its highest single day and weekly visitor arrival totals since the very beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to figures from the Macao Government Tourism Office, approximately 190,000 visitors arrived between 20-26 March, with 32,016 arriving on 20 March and 32,647 arriving on 26 March.

Macau casino stocks meanwhile rose to their highest level in almost two and a half months when the region reopened quarantine-free travel from China on 23 February. The decision means no city in mainland China is considered to be ‘medium risk’ for transmission of Covid-19 infection, therefore visitors from the country are free to travel without a requirement to undergo quarantine upon arrival.

For the first three months of the year, Macau’s GGR now stands at MOP$23.6bn, a 23% decline from the first three months of 2020.
