Crown Resorts plans to offer gambling at new Sydney location in early 2022

Australian casino operator Crown Resorts has announced plans to offer gambling at a new Sydney resort early in 2022.

Crown Melbourne

The operator stated it has been working with regulators to address governance failures.

The casino, which opened in December 2020, is part of a 75-floor tower complex. After several investigations revealed issues dealing with organised crime groups and money laundering, the casino had its licence suspended by the Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority (ILGA).

After a revision and certain changes of its leadership and board members, Crown is now planning to open a gaming floor early in the new year.

The New South Wales state ILGA, which oversees Crown’s Sydney licence, has confirmed the resort did make good progress on a series of governance changes.

Crown's hotel performance was affected by the lack of both domestic and international travel, the company added.

A Crown Spokesperson said: “As for regulatory issues, certainly with discussions we’ve had with customers and media and other stakeholders, Crown Melbourne is really a big part of the city fabric. It’s obviously been a really hard overhang on the business over the last 18 months.

“It has really impacted staff motivation. In terms of how they see that asset and how they see it as part of Melbourne, there hasn’t been an impact. We’ve clearly maintained a social license and we continue to demonstrate that.”
