The Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) will begin the process of searching for a new Executive Director following the resignation of Karen Wells.

As the current Executive Director, Wells is expected to depart the agency on 14 July 2023.

In a statement, Wells said: “Over the last decade, I’ve had the privilege of working for the Massachusetts Gaming Commission, first as the Director of the IEB and for the last three years as the Executive Director.

“I've worked across the agency since its formation with commissioners and staff who are dedicated public servants, committed to making sure the regulation of the gaming industry in Massachusetts focuses on ensuring the public confidence in the integrity of our operations.

"Together this team created the infrastructure for a new state agency, opened three casinos, weathered a pandemic, and launched the new legal sports wagering industry.”

Wells joined the MGC in 2013 and was instrumental for a number of projects within the department, including the recent legalisation of the sports betting industry in the state.

The process of selecting and appointing the next executive director is expected to take place during future public meetings at the MGC.

Cathy Judd-Stein, Chair of the MGC, said: “On behalf of my fellow commissioners I want to thank Karen for her contributions to the MGC over her 10 years of service and for the leadership she has provided as executive director.

“Karen is the model of a leader and her influence can be seen in everything the MGC does. We wish her the very best in the future.”

A few weeks ago, Betr launched its first real-money gaming product in Massachusetts, with a party held in Boston to celebrate.
