BetMGM has published a range of statistics pertaining to a growing trend of wagers placed on women’s sports and teams.

In the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) league alone, the operator has reported an increase of 27% in people betting on the sport, when compared year-on-year.

The 2023 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) women’s basketball tournament saw a 30% rise in its handle compared to last year, with active bettors increasing by 22% too.

According to BetMGM: “For the first time, betting action on the women’s NCAA tournament was comparable to an NFL game.”

The two current favourite teams to win have also attracted the highest handle, with the Las Vegas Aces sat at 39.6% and New York Liberty at 23.2%.

Seamus Magee, BetMGM Sports Trader, said: “The New York Liberty and Las Vegas Aces is our dream matchup for the finals and could generate some serious action.

“The worst outcome is anyone besides the two clear favourites, the Liberty and Aces, winning it all.”

The WBNA isn’t the only sport to see an increase in betting though, with women’s tennis and golf also with a 40% rise year-on-year.

In comparison, the men’s Major League Baseball league saw an 18% increase in betting.

Magee continued: “Handle is steadily picking up as the playoffs progress.

“The expansion of legalised sports betting and the WNBA’s most-watched regular season in over two decades are definitely key factors driving the increase.”

The 2023 Women’s FIFA World Cup also broke records with the amount of bets it received, making it the most-bet on Women’s World Cup ever at BetMGM.

Over in the UK, BetMGM has announced a multi-year partnership with Newcastle United to become its official club partner.
