ASA to host gambling advertising webinar

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), the UK’s independent advertising regulator, will host a webinar for the gambling industry on Tuesday 28 September.

The webinar will take place at 10am-11.30am (BST), with ASA experts set to cover many different topics within gambling advertising, including issues such as scheduling and financial claims, while the gambling ad rules will be explained in full.

Another prominent topic to be discussed in the webinar involves protecting children, with experts from the ASA outlining how the rules in this specific area will soon be strengthened.

The regulator last year launched a public consultation on proposals to introduce new strengthened guidance to better protect those under the age of 18 - as well as vulnerable people - from potential gambling-advertising related harms. The findings from the consultation are expected to be published soon.

“On a general level, gambling ads must not portray, condone or encourage behaviour that could lead to financial, social, or emotional harm. This includes encouraging consumers to continue gambling after a loss, implying that consumers can excel in poker without previous experience and emphasising the buzz consumers may feel while gambling,” a statement from the ASA read.

“Amongst other rules, gambling ads must not exploit the susceptibilities, aspirations, credulity, inexperience or lack of knowledge of children, young persons or other vulnerable persons.”

An ASA spokesperson said: “It's vital for gambling operators to understand what they can and can't say in ads.

“Given that we're likely to make updates to the rules soon, we encourage industry members to attend our upcoming webinar so that they can hear more about the rules directly from our experts.”
