The Casino Special Employee, Minh Nguyen, was found to have used her position as an assistant gaming manager to borrow thousands from her staff. Some of the borrowed money has not been paid back.
In 2020 and 2021, Ms Nguyen borrowed over AU$7,000 (US$5,000) from staff that was under her management.
In one of the cases, she had an employee leave work earlier and offered to drive him home. On the way, she complained about family problems and asked to borrow $1,000. According to the employee, she stopped the car at an ATM so he could withdraw the cash which she only repaid after many attempts over several months.
Another employee was asked for a $3,000 loan with the promise of being returned within two months. The employee loaned her $2,000, but only $1,000 was repaid five months later.
Employees added that she would not answer her phone or have her phone numbers disconnected. They would keep loaning her money because they did not want to say no to their manager, and they were also scared to talk to her or anyone else about the issue.
Ms Nguyen argued she did not feel she used her power as a manager to influence staff members to loan her money.
Philip Crawford, Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority Chairman, considered this a matter of integrity and said such employee behaviour affects the wider reputation of the business.
“The Authority revoked Ms Nguyen’s licence to prevent her and others from further gambling-related harms.
“The repeated nature of the contraventions indicates a lack of honesty and considerable lack of diligence or ability with respect to regulatory compliance.”
