The gambling hub of Macau has posted its revenue report for July 2023, showing that the region made MOP 16.66bn ($2.07bn) in gross gaming revenue (GGR).

The figure represents a 10% month-on-month rise against June 2023 and a whopping 4,086% increase on July 2023. Furthermore, for the year so far, Macau’s figures are 236% higher than 2022’s – totalling MOP 96.80.

“Macau’s MOP 16.66 is far higher than the $1.25bn posted by Nevada in June’

The numbers not only represent a significant increase against last year but also chart the recovery of Macau as it finds itself freed from China’s zero-Covid policy.

The MOP 16.66bn figure is the highest reported since the pandemic began, though it is still down on July 2019, which totalled MOP 24.45bn – meaning Macau still has some way to go before a full recovery can be announced.

There is, of course, the chance that Macau will never fully recover from the impact of Covid, as other places in Asia have taken significant portions of the business the region relied on – with Singapore and the Philippines responsible for snagging many of the VIP’s that used to (almost) exclusively gamble in Macau. The fall of junkets and VIP betting are also two huge factors.

The data below details the figures from Macau’s July figures dating back to 2021.

Comparing Macau’s July figures against Nevada’s from June, the numbers show that Macau’s MOP 16.66 is far higher than the $1.25bn posted by Nevada. Additionally, while Nevada’s figures reveal a 2% drop annually, by contrast, Macau is only growing – although it has a higher base that is trying to once again attain.
