Kansspelautoriteit (KSA), the Gambling Authority of the Netherlands, has published the 2023 Gambling Market Scan, reflecting on information gathered on the nation's gambling market over 2022. However, 2022 was the first full year where online gambling was available in the Netherlands, which is a point heavily analysed and compared in the report.

The report states a total gaming gross result (BSR) of €3.4bn ($4.13bn) in 2022, a €1.4bn increase from the year before. The report indicates that this change was due, in part, to higher demand for land-based casinos and arcades following the Covid-19 pandemic, but that this change was more significantly impacted by the accessibility of online gambling.

The online gambling market was responsible for 31% of 2022’S BSR, while land-based gambling equated to 69%. Casino games were the most popular in 2022, making up for 56% of the BSR, while lotteries made up 10% – 8% of which was online.

When comparing this report to statistics from 2018, the most notable changes in value came from the online market. The land-based industry in the Netherlands was hit harshly in 2020 and 2021 due to Covid-19, and while land-based revenue numbers are increasing, they have yet to match the BSR of 2018 and 2019. Meanwhile, the online market has seen significant growth, due to its legalisation.

In 2022, the average Dutch adult spent €258 on games, compared to €158 in 2021, and €221 in pre-pandemic 2019. The Netherlands follows the trend of many European countries, of more being spent on land-based gambling than on online gambling. Finally, on average in 2022, Dutch citizens spend 14% less than other Europeans on gambling.
