Allwyn appoints Mark Hughes as Chief Security Officer for The National Lottery

Allwyn, the incoming operator of The National Lottery, has announced the appointment of Mark Hughes as its new Chief Security Officer. Hughes, who will assume his role on 15 January, will play a key role in overseeing all aspects of security for The National Lottery, joining Allwyn's executive leadership team ahead of the official takeover on 1 February.

Hughes previously served as the Chief Information Security Officer at Smart DCC, the organisation responsible for the secure communication network supporting the rollout of smart meters across the UK.

Prior to his role at Smart DCC, Hughes also spent 16 years at Vodafone where he served as the Chief Corporate Security Officer for its UK business. During his tenure at Vodafone, he led Corporate Security operations and the Security compliance program, collaborating extensively with Central Government and British Intelligence Agencies to implement Security controls and best practices.

Andria Vidler, Allwyn CEO, UK, stated: “Preserving the security of The National Lottery at all times is of critical importance, including as we roll out our ambitious plans for the transformation of The National Lottery so that it becomes more modern, digital and engaging for players. I’m delighted to welcome Mark to our team.”

Hughes' responsibilities as Chief Security Officer will span information security, game platform security and physical security as he aims to ensure a comprehensive approach to safeguarding The National Lottery's operations.

Hughes himself added: “I’m thrilled to be joining Allwyn and being part of the next chapter in the journey of the National Lottery. Working for an organisation that literally makes dreams come true and contributes to good causes is a huge privilege and I can’t wait to get started.”

This news comes after Allwyn reported soaring total revenue and gross gaming revenue – but mainly thanks to its Camelot acquisitions – earlier in the month.
