Total gambling spend decreases in Denmark for second consecutive year

Spillemyndigheden, Denmark’s gambling authority, has reported its gambling spend for the country during the course of 2023.

Overall, gambling totalled DKK 10.3bn (US$1.5bn) for the year, signifying a slight decrease compared to 2022 of around 1.7%.

This now means for the second consecutive year, gross gaming revenue (GGR) has seen a decline, while this represents its lowest total for a number of years.

Looking closer at 2023’s numbers, lotteries once again held the largest market share for total gambling, with gambling spend set at DKK 3.5bn, representing around 34% of total spend.

Online casino was second at DKK 3.1bn, followed by betting with DKK 2.2bn, gaming machines DKK 1.2bn and finally with 4% of the market share land-based casino was valued at DKK 362m.

Since 2012, the online casino market has increased by 192%, followed by betting which has grown by 55%. Gaming machines, land-based casinos and lotteries on the other hand have all declined within the same period.

On 1 October 2023, Denmark introduced mandatory Player ID requirements for players who wanted to bet at kiosks or betting shops.

Since the implementation, there has been a drop in GGR for land-based casinos, while online casinos have seen an increase as a result.

In other financial news today, New Jersey has reported its gaming revenue figures for February, underlining an increase in its overall numbers when compared to the same period last year.

However, land-based casino revenue saw decreases in revenue.
