Google Play removes several gambling applications in Vietnam

Google has removed 56 gambling applications from its Google Play store in Vietnam.

The move follows a request from the Vietnamese Authority of Broadcasting and Electronic Information, as the applications did not comply with the country's established laws.

Vietnam Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc had previously asked for enhanced co-operation with global technology firms and Google’s response appears an important step in that direction.

All 56 games used the Vietnamese language, with 16 of them violating Google Play rules and therefore also being removed outside of the country.

Recently, tech giant Apple pulled around 25,000 illegal lottery apps from the app store in China to comply with tightening regulation, amid criticism from state media.

In a plan to reduce betting content from the App Store, Google’s rivals accidentally removed applications that had no connection to gambling in early August.
