The figures come amid the government’s imminent review of gambling regulations across the UK.

Latest statistics show that 9,008 problem gamblers received care between March 2019 and March 2020.

Of those 9,008 who received treatment, almost half had reported debts, while around 25% claimed they lost relationships due to problem gambling. And just over 10% said they had lost their job because of their negative gambling habits.

The figures show that the majority 0f those in treatment show an improvement and were no longer classed as problem gamblers upon conclusion of the treatment.

The 9,008 people receiving help meanwhile was an improvement of the figure of 7,675 total in 2019.

The statistics also indicate an increase in online gambling, which rose from 57% in 2019 to 69% in 2020.

In contrast, betting in bookmakers declined from 56% to 38%

“The publication of this detailed analysis, of the impact the National Gambling Treatment Service can have on people receiving support, is a significant milestone,” said Marc Etches, chief executive of GambleAware.
