Maryland casinos report slight increase in December gaming revenue

The data, released by the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Authority, reveals a steady performance within the state's gaming industry.

Maryland's six casinos collectively generated $165.6m in gaming revenue from slot machines and table games during December 2023, marking a marginal increase of 0.3% compared to the same period in 2022. 

Casino contributions to the state amounted to $70.2m in December 2023, reflecting a 0.7% increase from the previous year.

These contributions play a role in supporting the Education Trust Fund, community development, the Maryland horse racing industry and small, minority- and women-owned businesses.

Maryland's six privately owned casinos, featuring both slot machines and table games, include MGM National Harbor, Live! Casino & Hotel, Horseshoe Casino Baltimore, Ocean Downs Casino, Hollywood Casino Perryville and Rocky Gap Casino Resort.

Breaking down the December 2023 figures for each casino:

- MGM National Harbor: Generated $70.8m, marking a 2.1% increase from December 2022.

- Live! Casino & Hotel: Reported $60.6m, reflecting a 1.5% growth from December 2022.

- Horseshoe Casino: Recorded $15.2m, indicating a 9.6% decrease from December 2022.

- Ocean Downs Casino: Accounted for $7m, showing a 2.7% decrease from December 2022.

- Hollywood Casino: Accumulated $7.6m, registering a 4.0% increase from December 2022.

- Rocky Gap Casino: Posted $4.4m, indicating an 8.2% decrease from December 2022.

Comparatively, November 2023 witnessed a decline in gaming revenue, totalling $157.7m, down by 3.5% from the previous year. Notable variations among individual casinos included a 10.6% decrease for Horseshoe Casino Baltimore, while Live! Casino & Hotel and Hollywood Casino Perryville experienced growth of 1.6% and 0.1%, respectively.

Despite the marginal dip in casino revenue, the state reported growth in gaming revenue from other sources, with October 2023 marking the highest month for sports wagering at $5.8m. A total contribution of $66.2m was made by casinos to the state, with $47.7m directed to the Education Trust Fund.
